Introducing Pie & Jira Integration

Pie now brings smart project and portfolio management to Jira with the new Pie Project Management App Connector for Jira. This 2-way real-time integration is perfect for hybrid agile projects when your development team prefers to use Jira. The rest of the project team, such as program and project managers, client team members, and stakeholders, prefers to use Pie for its simplicity and portfolio robustness. The Pie Project Management App Connector for Jira can be downloaded into your Jira account from the Atlassian Marketplace.

This feature will allow you to map your Pie sprint board columns with the Jira board columns. It can also connect a Pie process box with the Jira project’s Backlog. When you create or update a story task in one, it creates or updates the other. All in real time!

Why Integrate Pie with Jira?

Ok, our customers know that Pie already has full pure agile and scrum capabilities. It includes Hybrid Agile features with the option to run multiple sprint teams in tandem. However, we have found that some customers have development teams who prefer to use Jira for its extra hard-core scrum features and complex configurations.

Yes, Jira has a huge market, but at the same time, many Jira customers find that outside of their core developers, the rest of their project team and stakeholders find Jira is not best designed for end-to-end project execution with program management, flexible framework reusability, and executive portfolio oversight. Our customers have said that side of the fence is much easier and more powerful in Pie.

Introducing the new Pie Project Management App Connector for Jira brings the best of both worlds where your development team can deep dive into Jira, and the rest of the project team, program managers, and portfolio executives can plan, execute, and manage easily in Pie.

Watch the following short video to learn the value of the Pie/Jira connector.

How it Works

The Pie Project Management App Connector for Jira brings Pie into the Jira picture as an umbrella oversight tool. First, you start importing the connector from the Atlassian Marketplace into your Jira site account. Then you connect your Pie project with either an existing Jira project or have Pie auto-create the sister project in Jira. Next is mapping the Pie Sprint columns, backlog process box, and project team members with the Jira project.

Once Pie and Jira are all mapped together, you can create story tasks in the Pie project as your project moves from the planning phase to the definition and initial requirements phase. Those story tasks automatically show up in Jira. Likewise, if your Jira manager creates story tasks (Jira “issues”) in Jira, they automatically show up in Pie. The Jira story task owner can then break down the story into subtasks for detailed development or coding work. Once the Jira member drags and drops the story task to another Sprint column, that sister story task in Pie is automatically dragged and dropped into that next column. This way, the Pie program/project manager can visually see the progress of what’s going on in Jira while monitoring Pie.

When you complete the Sprint in Jira, the Sprint in Pie is automatically completed at the same time. This way, you can monitor the completed Sprint stories across multiple done Sprints in Pie with a simple visual.

All of the Jira Sprint story progress states auto-update the Pie project, program, and portfolio dashboards and reports in real time.

Key Features

The following features all work in real-time with the two-way API synchronization.

  • Connect a Pie project with an existing Jira (teams-managed) project or have Pie auto-create a new project in Jira.

  • Map Pie board columns with Jira project board columns

  • Map a Pie process box to be used for backlog story task to the Jira project backlog

  • Map the Pie project team members with the same people in the Jira project.

  • Creating a story task in the Pie backlog box will auto-create it in Jira's backlog and vice versa

  • Moving a story task from the Pie backlog to the Pie sprint board column will auto move it from the Jira backlog to the Jira board and vice versa

  • Creating a task in the Pie sprint board will auto-create it in the Jira sprint board

  • Adding descriptions or changing story titles of a story task in one tool will auto-update in the other tool

  • Assigning a team member in Pie to a sprint story task will auto-assign that person to the same story item in Jira, providing that person is already a member of the Jira project

  • Assigning a team member to the Jira item auto-assigns them to the same task in Pie, again assuming they are a member of both tool projects

  • Dragging and dropping the story item from one sprint column to another one in Jira will auto move it in Pie in real-time likewise, moving it in Pie will move it in Jira

  • Marking a sprint completed in Jira will auto mark that same sprint in Pie as completed and auto move completed tasks to the Pie Done Sprints slice

  • This Jira sync works with only Team-Managed Jira projects. It will not connect with Company-Managed Jira projects.
